Our Adoption Story
Background:
Ken and Theresa began the adoption process around year 2003. We were not able to get pregnant so we began looking into the adoption process. It turns out there are multiple types of adoption: domestic vs. international; private or through the state; attorney vs. agency; open vs. closed; there is a lot more to adoption than we imagined. After several seminars and some research, we decided to go through an agency for a domestic open adoption. We chose Bethany Christian Services because of the Christian affinity (it was important to use an agency that shared the same core values as us) and because this agency is nationwide. Bethany has an excellent process that takes longer but offers counseling to both the birth parents and the adoptive parents before and after the date of birth. This process is a major reason for the success of their baby placements.
Early April 2009:
On Saturday, April 4th Ken took Theresa to the airport because she was going to visit her family in Pennsylvania while Ken went to Indianapolis, Indiana for work. Ken flew out on Monday, April 6th. Then late Thursday night after Ken’s business trip in Indy was finished, he flew to Pennsylvania to meet up with Theresa. On Friday (Good Friday), April 10th Ken and Theresa borrowed a car from Theresa’s sister in order to drive to meet up with Theresa’s father. We spent lunch with her father then on the drive back to Theresa’s sister house (where we were staying) we got "the phone call". Bethany Christian Services called us to let us know a birth mother picked us to be the adoptive parents of a baby little girl. We were so excited; we pulled over to the side of the road to get as much as information possible. The baby was born on Thursday, April 9th and was healthy enough to be discharged from the hospital on Friday, April 10th into the care of Bethany.
Mid April 2009:
On Easter Sunday, Ken and Theresa flew home and on Monday morning April 13th we went straight to the adoption agency. There we met for the very first time a very beautiful little baby girl that was to be our daughter. "Chloe McKenzie". There is just no possible way to describe the incredible amount of JOY we were feeling at that moment. God blessed us in such a way that we could not have imagined even though we have been waiting for this moment for many years. The first week as a new family was very hard with many sleepless nights and new born baby cries but it was also so wonderful, we would not change any of it. We are so excited and so thankful for the opportunity to be parents. Our prayers have been answered.
